The Rt. Hon. Sean Manning MP is the Labour Member of Parliament for Stoke-on-Trent South. He is currently the Secretary of State for Employment within the Cabinet of the United Kingdom

Early Life[]

Sean Manning was born to Susan and Michael Manning in 1922 in Stoke-on-Trent. His mother was a housewife and local Labour Party activist, and his father worked in the Shelton Bar Steelworks as a Foreman. His father was also deeply involved in the Iron and Steel Trades Confederation and was a Regional Officer for the West Midlands for a number of years (a position that his son would later attain).

Sean Manning attened the Thistley Hough High School where he showed particular interest in Geography and History. Despite attaining modestly good grades, Sean did not seek to further his education after completing Secondary Education. At the age of 18, he was conscripted into the army to serve in World War II from 1940-1945.

Pre-Parliamentary Career[]

Upon returning from conscripted service in 1945, Sean found work in the Shelton Bar Steelworks, where he worked for 19 years - 10 years as a lineman and a further 9 years as a foreman. During his time at the Shelton Bar Steelworks, Sean was active within the Iron and Steel Trades Confederation, serving as a local officer for 11 years and as a regional officer for a further 5 years.

Sean joined the Labour Party in 1945.

Parliamentary Career[]

Sean was selected as a Parliamentary Candidate for Stoke-on-Trent South in 1964 and was elected to the House of Commons the same year. In his maiden speech he urged for closer co-operation with the Unions.

Sean was given his first Government post in 1966 as a Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for the Department of Industry. In 1968 he was promoted again and attained the office of Minister of State, remaining in the Department of Industry. When Labour lost Government in 1970, Sean became a Labour Party whip and served in this capacity for 4 years before being appointed to the Cabinet in the position of Secretary of State for Employment by Peter Redmond. Upon the resignation of Peter Redmond and the election of Jamie McMahon, Sean was promoted to the position of Chancellor of the Exchequer.
