Parliamentary Career

Sean was selected as a Parliamentary Candidate for Holborn and St. Pancras in 1986 and was elected to the House of Commons the following year. In his maiden speech he urged for a greater focus on tackling inequality and poverty.

Sean was a member of the Shadow Cabinet under John Smith for a number of years in a variety of positions, being appointed as Home Secretary in Wright's newly formed Labour Government in 1997, going on to also head the Department for Trade and Industry in 1998.
